Overview

Tiji Festival is a 3-day celebration in the highlands of Upper Mustang, a restricted trekking zone of Nepal. Of course, the only way to get in is with special trekking permits from the Immigration. Tiji Festival Trek 2020 is just around the corner, and we are excited to bring you this program.

Celebrating Tiji Festival Trek 2020 – 19th to 21st of May

Upper Mustang is home to ancient Tibetan Kingdom and culture. Every year, Tiji is observed by the local monks and residents to chase away the dark demons and restore peace in the world. In 2020, Tiji festival is being observed from the 19th to the 21st of May.

Our itinerary for the 2020 Tiji is organized so that we reach the village a day before the festival starts. The good thing about this trip is that we get to experience trekking in the restricted zone along with observing one of the most oldest festivals in the world.

Lo-manthang, the epicenter of this festival, is filled with performers, priests, monks and observers from around the world. The rituals take you back in time as ancient dance and music fills up the environment with a spiritual aroma. Various dances, prayers, rites and rituals are performed to gradually progress the ceremony. The ritual is performed at the ancient and historically important Lo-manthang Palace that takes place every year. The festival is seated by the tribal royal family (now constitutionally abolished).

Tiji 2

To make this trip interesting, we have incorporated Kathmandu Valley sightseeing as well as trekking into the itinerary (see below). From Kathmandu, we have to take first flight to Pokhara and another to Jomsom, from where the trekking will start. The ragged landscape of Manang and Mustang Region are jaw dropping. Add with that the colors of Tiji, and the whole trip experience becomes simply mind-blowing. After all, it is the festivals of Nepal that keep it unique and loved aside the tall mountains and natural beauty.

People that have been to this festival describe it as “out of this world” experience as you literally go back in time of the ancient Tibetan tradition. Also, the significance of world peace along with victory of good over evil makes this practice important.
