World Heritage Sightseeing: Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath

After breakfast, we will spend the day exploring three World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. First, we will visit the holy temple of Pashupatinath - a center of Hindu followers all over the world. The temple covers a large area and accommodates animals as well as people who have devoted their life to Lord Shiva. Monkeys, cows and dogs are a common sight.

Several charities run to help feed and accommodate the poor and needy in the temple premise. We will also observe the traditional Hindu Cremation by the banks of River Bagmati.

Boudhanath is a large Stupa in central Kathmandu, and is surrounded by modern houses and roof top restaurants, along with a few monasteries in the area. It is mandatory to circle the stupa while rotating the prayer drums. A sense of peace and tranquility can be experienced as we explore this ancient world heritage site.

Climbing a small hill will bring us to Swayambhunath, a Buddhist stupa of great historical and religious importance. Our tour guide will explain the story behind these monuments and how they influence the everyday life of Kathmandu residents.

Later, we return back to our hotel for rest. Feel free to explore Thamel for a good evening with friends and loved ones.

  • day 3

Sightseeing tour of Patan and Kathmandu Durbar Square

The Kathmandu and Patan Durbar Square are the monuments going back to the 3rd Century B.C, and hence are a great spectacle. Furthermore, the native Newars living in the area bring them back to life with annual festivals and processions. This is why, they are listed as the World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. It is quite majestic to think that the ancient Royals used to stroll the same streets and run the Kingdom from these very monuments.

The April 2015 earthquake has brought much damage to these monuments and as a result, they are on the course of reconstruction. However, being archeologically important as well, the restoration is taking much time. Some parts have been slightly damaged while some are undergoing full restoration.
